Fascia board, ridge, valley, eaves flashing: the accessories of a metal roof
Contents11

A metal roof is closed off with accessories: the ridge at the top, the valley between the roof slopes, the eaves flashing at the bottom, the fascia board and the verge trims at the edges, the gable flashings at the walls. Each has its place and its turn in the installation. Below, one by one, is what each part is and where it goes, according to the BELPROFILE descriptions.

The fascia board and the fascia cover profile

The fascia board is the board that borders the roof: the gutter brackets are fixed to it, and it also closes the side edges. The metal roofing sheets do not cover it by themselves. The fascia cover profile covers and seals the side fascia board areas left uncovered when the roof covering is installed.

The eaves flashing

It is installed on the timber board that supports the gutters, after they are installed and before the anti-condensation membrane, with an overlap of 5 cm over the gutter. It carries into the gutter the water that reaches the bottom edge of the roof.

The valley and the side abutment flashing

The valley is installed at the junction of two roof slopes and takes the water that collects there. Along its centre line, on both sides, a limit of 70 mm is marked, up to which the roof covering comes. It is fixed with clips; drilling it is forbidden.

The side abutment flashing is installed at the junction between a wall or an abutting wall and a roof pitch, at a right angle, when the pitch runs along the wall. It is fixed into the wall.

The ridge and the ridge end cap

The ridge closes the top junction between two roof slopes, in a level or an inclined position. On metal roof tiles it is the ribbed ridge, and its ends are closed with ridge end caps, perforated to let the air circulate. On click roofing sheets and on standing seam roofing it is the straight ridge, which is fixed into the high hook-in profile, without drilling the panels.

The half ridge

The half ridge is used to close the top of the ridge area, when a roof slope meets a vertical wall of the building. On standing seam roofing, the gable flashings close the side edge of the roof.

The verge trim and the top abutment flashing

The verge trim closes the roof at the sides. It goes over the roof covering and over the fascia board, together with the verge underflashing, and is fixed with self-drilling screws, every 70 cm on metal roof tiles.

The verge underflashing is installed on the edges of the roof, after the eaves flashing and before the tiles. It takes the water that gathers at the edge when the edge is not perpendicular to the eaves.

The top abutment flashing is used at the junction between a wall or an abutting wall and a roof pitch, at an obtuse angle, when the pitch starts from the wall. It is fixed into the wall.

The transition flashings

They are used where the pitch changes within the same roof slope: the external one at the change from a shallower pitch to a steeper one, the internal one at the change from a steeper pitch to a shallower one.

The sealing strips and the bird guard

The sealing strips close the gaps left between the flashings and the shape of the tile, where birds or large insects could nest. Those for the ridge and the eaves are perforated, so that they do not stop the ventilation. The bird guard lets the air through and keeps birds and large insects out.

The snow guards, the membrane and the screws

  • The snow barrier and the snow guard keep the snow from falling off the roof all at once.
  • The anti-condensation membrane protects the roof from water ingress and from condensation.
  • The self-drilling screws of 4.8×35 mm fix the sheets to the structure, and those of 4.8×20 mm fix the sheets to one another and the accessories to the sheets.
  • The adhesive butyl tape seals the connections between planes.
  • The touch-up paint covers scratches and cut edges.

In what order are they installed?

First the parts that collect the water: the gutters, the eaves flashing, the valley and the verge underflashing. Then the roof covering. Last the parts that close it: the verge trims, the ridge with its end caps and the gable flashings.

In short

The accessories are chosen to suit the roof covering and are made in its colours. BELPROFILE groups them into two sets: accessories for metal roof tiles, with 20 parts, and accessories for click roofing sheets, with 14. For the parts list of your roof, request a quote.
